The Republic of China Yearbook 2009
The 2009 edition of the Republic of China Yearbook offers a kaleidoscopic overview of contemporary Taiwan, reporting on the major events of the previous year and tracking the latest trends. At the same time, the book’s 21 chapters—in which the ROC’s culture, technological advances, foreign relations, environmental initiatives and a plethora of other areas are explored—provide more than just up-to-date facts and figures. Informative writing, new photographs, charts and tables, and feature boxes dotted throughout the book all help to deepen the reader’s understanding of this unique and colorful nation.
Five appendices include a chronology of events in 2008, a timeline covering 1949 to 2007, the full text of the Constitution of the Republic of China and its Additional Articles, a comparison of romanization systems, and an English-Chinese glossary for bilingual readers. In addition, the “Who’s Who in the ROC” section lists leaders from across the political spectrum and all walks of life.
With the exception of certain personal and place names, Mandarin terms and names are rendered using the Hanyu Pinyin system. Unless otherwise indicated, U.S. Dollar figures for 2008 are based on the average exchange rate of NT$31.52 per US$1, as calculated by the Central Bank of the ROC.
