TAIWAN YEARBOOK 2005

The Taiwan Yearbook provides the most current and authoritative information on Taiwan, as well as annual updates of major events, political and social trends, and statistics. The 2005 edition contains new facts, figures, and developments to clearly describe Taiwan's conditions in 2004, and features two new sections for the readers' convenience. First, "The Year in Review" gives a quick recap of major events of the past year at the front of the book. Second, each chapter now begins with a summary of the important developments over the past year.

The yearbook offers a comprehensive and cohesive overview of most fields of interest concerning Taiwan. The 22 chapters provide details on history, government, national defense, foreign relations, education, economics, environmental protection, science and technology, relations with China, and other important aspects of Taiwan. In-depth essays, color photos, graphs, charts, and tables assist the reader in understanding Taiwan in the context of 21st century globalization. The five appendices present a chronology of events in 2004, a timetable covering 1949 to 2003, a summary of national holidays and memorial days, information for tourists, and a comparison of romanization systems. Finally, the "Who's Who in Taiwan" section lists prominent leaders across the political spectrum and from all walks of life.

With the exception of certain historical figures and established personal and place names, Mandarin terms related to Taiwan are rendered in Tongyong Pinyin, Taiwan's official romanization system since August 2002. The people and places of the People's Republic of China (PRC) are transliterated using the PRC's pinyin system. To assist bilingual readers, the yearbook provides extensive Chinese annotation throughout the text. Unless otherwise noted, an exchange rate of NT$34.42 to US$1 has been used in financial statistics.

Taiwan Yearbook 2005 is an essential reference on one of Asia's most dynamic societies. The full text of this publication can also be obtained on-line at http://www.gio.gov.tw.
