Since entering the 21st century, aside from continuing to give impetus to educational reform and scientific development, placing stress on the humanities, and turning Taiwan into a Green Silicon Island, the government has also actively promoted sports development so that people in Taiwan can be healthier and happier. The National Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (NCPFS), the highest sports organization of the ROC, continues to promote "sports for all people" so as to improve people's physical fitness and increase sports strength. Healthy habits of proper exercise acquired early in life by students, and plentiful, well-equipped recreational facilities readily accessible to old and young alike, have both become more prominent goals in educational reform proposals and government plans. The growing value placed on exercise and leisure is also apparent at the individual consumer level. According to the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics 行政院主計處 (DGBAS), spending on sports and recreation by ROC citizens has increased by an average of 10 percent each year over the last decade. This chapter provides a balanced overview of the ROC's sports and recreation programs by giving a brief introduction of all of the options available to the public.
