Government

Governmental Structure

The ROC government is divided into central, provincial/municipal, and county/city levels, each of which has specifically defined powers. The central government consists of the Office of the President 總統府, the National Assembly 國民大會, and five branches (called "yuan" 院), namely the Executive Yuan 行政院, the Legislative Yuan 立法院, the Judicial Yuan 司法院, the Examination Yuan 考試院, and the Control Yuan 監察院.

Organization of the Central Government

At the provincial level, the provincial governments exercise administrative authority. Since the ROC government administers only Taiwan Province and two counties in Fujian Province, only two provincial governments are currently operational--the Taiwan Provincial Government 臺灣省政府 and the Fujian Provincial Government 福建省政府. The Fujian Provincial Government oversees the regional affairs of Kinmen County 金門縣 and Lienchiang County 連江縣. Likewise, the Taiwan Provincial Government exercises full jurisdiction over Taiwan's 16 counties and all the cities except for Taipei and Kaohsiung, which are special municipalities directly under the jurisdiction of the central government.

At the local level and under the Taiwan Provincial Government, there are five cities--Keelung 基隆, Hsinchu 新竹, Taichung 臺中, Chiayi 嘉義, and Tainan 臺南--and 16 counties. Under each county there are county municipalities 縣轄市.
