The metric system is the official system of weights and measures in the ROC,
and it is used for nearly all purposes. Certain things, however, continue to
be measured according to various other systems. Real estate property, for example,
is usually measured in p'ing (tsubo), or the size of a six-by-six-foot tatami
mat, a remnant from Taiwan's period of Japanese occupation. There are measures
for gold, Chinese herbal medicine, and other specialized commodities. The following
tables give equivalents in the diverse systems in use in Taiwan: the Taiwan
system, the metric system, and the English system.
