As the standard of living on Taiwan continues to rise, citizens are increasingly seeking a more balanced lifestyle of sports and recreational activities to provide a suitable physical and spiritual counterpoise to the frenetic pace of national development. The government has been gradually reducing the workweek from six to five days. In 2001, government workers began working only Monday to Friday, and the private sector also worked every other Saturday for half a day (84 hours per 2 weeks). This has provided everyone with more time to spend with their family or to pursue hobbies and recreational activities.

Healthy habits of proper exercise acquired early in life by students, and plentiful, well-appointed recreational facilities readily accessible to old and young alike, have become more prominent goals in educational reform proposals and government plans. The growing value placed on exercise and leisure is also apparent at the individual consumer level. According to the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics 行政院主計處 (DGBAS), spending on sports and recreation by ROC citizens has increased by an average of 10 percent each year over the last decade. This chapter seeks to provide a balanced overview of the ROC's sports and recreation programs by giving a brief introduction of all of the options available to the public.
