The Republic of China Yearbook 2008
The 2008 edition of the Republic of China Yearbook offers a kaleidoscopic overview of contemporary Taiwan, reporting on the major events of the previous year and tracking the latest trends. At the same time, the book’s 21 chapters—which explore the ROC’s culture, technological advances, foreign relations, environmental initiatives, and a plethora of other areas—do more than just update the facts and figures. Informative writing, new photographs, charts and tables, and feature boxes dotted throughout the book, all help to deepen the reader’s understanding of this unique and colorful nation.
Five appendices provide a chronology of events in 2007; a timeline from 1949 to 2006; the full text of the Constitution of the Republic of China and its Additional Articles; a comparison of romanization systems; and an English-Chinese glossary for bilingual readers. In addition, the “Who’s Who in the Republic of China” section lists important leaders from across the political spectrum and all walks of life.
With the exception of certain personal and place names related to Taiwan, Mandarin terms and names are rendered in the Hanyu Pinyin System. Financial statistics for 2007 are based on the year’s average exchange rate of NT$32.84 to US$1.
