Q1:
What is the current status of Taiwan's public health?
A: Taiwan's public health has improved significantly over the past century. In 1906, for example, the average life span of Taiwan residents was 39 for males and 43 for females. By 2000, the average life span had increased to 72 for males and 78 for females. In addition, the infant mortality rate has been reduced from 84.1 per thousand live births in 1906 to 5.9 in 2000, while the maternal mortality rate per thousand live births has been lowered from 7.6 to 0.1 during the same period. This progress was the result of Taiwan's steady economic growth, improved nutrition, vaccination programs, family planning, universal education, and the continuous improvement of medical personnel and midwives. |
