Palauan Vice President Sandra S. Pierantozzi on Wednesday reaffirmed her country's support for Taiwan's bid to join the World Health Organization.

Pierantozzi, who arrived in Taipei on Tuesday for a five-day visit, made the statement while meeting with President Chen Shui-bian.

She also conveyed the Palauan government and people's gratitude for Taiwan's assistance in their country's medical service and economic development.

Pierantozzi said Palau's support for Taiwan's WHO bid is based on the principles of justice and righteousness. It is immoral for the WHO to snub Taiwan simply because of Beijing's opposition, she said.

For his part, Chen lauded Pierantozzi for her political achievements. Pierantozzi was Palau's first female senator and is now the Pacific island nation's first female vice president. She had twice conducted research at Harvard University
