EU will support Taiwan participation in WHO: EU rep

Brian McDonald, the first Head of Office of the European Economic and Trade Office in Taiwan, said on Wednesday that there will be progress in discussions on Taiwan's participation in the World Health Organization at the WHO's annual conference in June.

McDonald said he expects that there will be proposals made at the meeting on arranging Taiwan's participation in the international health body. He also said that while the European Union only has observer status in the WHO and does not have the right to speak, it will support Taiwan's efforts to take part in the global health body.

In his first press conference since arriving in Taiwan, McDonald said the European Union and Taiwan maintain a close trade relationship, but that there are many other issues that the two sides need to discuss, naming intellectual property rights as a priority.
