Sonan's salamanders (Hynobius sonani) are a special species endemic to Taiwan primarily found under stones in primeval forests located on high mountains at an altitude of over 2,000 meters. With an extremely narrow distribution and a very small population, the salamanders are categorized as an endangered species in urgent need of protection.(Chuen-Fu Lin)
