February 25, 2003
United Daily News/Taipei - According to a hidden mark on copies of Metro Goldwyn Mayer Incorporated (MGM), the pirated optical discs of the latest James Bond film,
Die Another Day, links to a copy of the film sent to the Federation of Drama Societies for the purpose of Oscar Academy Awards consideration.
"Loaned for awards consideration purposes only, property of MGM/United Artists", displays at the 17:00 minute of Disc One of the pirated optical discs.
In other words, the Federation of Drama Societies slipped out a copy of the film to the pirates in the process of evaluation.
The entertainment company has already requested the Federation of Drama Societies to investigate on the matter.
007:Die Another Day is a MGM movie production, with overseas circulation by
20th Century-Fox Film Corporation.
People are astonished to learn from the hidden mark that the pirated optical discs were duplicated from the Oscar Academy Awards copy, said Ming Tu, CEO of the Taiwan Branch of the 20th Century-Fox Film Corporation.
Tu has informed the headquarters of the issue and high-level communication between 20th Century-Fox and MGM has been done. Both companies demanded an explanation from the Federation of Drama Societies.
In reality, film producers are not concerned with stealth version of pirated materials since the consumers will not be satisfied with the poor quality of picture, sound, and the occasional appearance of heads.
However, it's a totally different story with replication from optical discs. The clarity of the picture and the overall quality of the pirated ODs are no less than that of the legal versions, thus present a great threat to legal movie producers.
In order to track down to the source of piracy, film companies mark on each copy of film, and therefore, the copy associated with piracy can be indicated when a pirated copy is found.
