The 2006 Taiwan International Film & TV Expo, held by the Government Information Office (GIO) will kick off next month. All of Taiwan's most important film and television events will be held under the Expo banner in November. The Film & TV Expo held its first press conference on October 12. GIO Minister Cheng Wen-tsang, the "Grand Poobah" of the Expo, delivered remarks to members of the media attending the press conference. He also unveiled the Expo's main theme poster, centering on the Chinese character "cai," which means "talent," as well as the poster including the Expo's five "film and television ambassadors." Minister Cheng extended an invitation to members of the film and television industry from Taiwan and overseas to attend this year's Expo, which will be the biggest one yet held on Taiwan. Two of the "film and television ambassadors," Chen Bo-lin and Guey Lun-mei, the stars of the 2002 hit film The Blue Gate, also appeared at the press conference
Last year, the GIO for the first time arranged for a large-scale film and television expo to be held on Taiwan. The GIO organized the event with the hope of enhancing Taiwan's film and television industry, promoting a film and television convergence policy, and strengthening Taiwan's competitiveness in the international film and television arena. Last year's event was an unparalleled success. As a result, the GIO this year is again holding the Golden Horse Awards, the Golden Bell Awards, the Taipei TV & Film Festival and the Taiwan Film & TV Project Promotion under the Expo banner. In addition, the Expo will be further expanded by holding a series of activities associated with the 50 Year Retrospective of Taiwanese Language Films. Also, the Asia Pacific Film Festival will be held this year in Taipei, further rounding out this year's Expo. It is expected that the scale of this year's events and the number of participants attending will set new highs, turning November into "Film & TV Month" in Taipei and attracting the attention of the world to this film and television carnival.
The Film and TV Expo is more than a just a group of activities bunched together. The GIO hopes that the integration of public and private sector resources in holding this series of activities will foster international exchanges. The GIO expects Taiwan to be in the international spotlight in November as it holds this series of film and television gala events. The Expo will provide a forum for interaction among people on the business side of film and TV, and will also bring together any number of industry stars.
Minister Chen said that last year's Expo revolved around the Chinese character "fa," which is used in the words discover, express and create. Organizers of this year's event have decided to focus on the Chinese character "cai" as the central word for this year's Expo. "Cai" is used to form the word "talent." In addition, the theme for this year's Expo is "Spotlight on Taiwan - Vision for Asia."
"Cai Gao Ba Dou," is a Chinese expression that means "extremely talented." In the international film and television market, Taiwan is already well known for its expertise and innovation. It is hoped that this year's 2006 Taiwan International Film and TV Expo will bring together not only talent from Asia but also from throughout the world, helping to pave the way for even more accomplishments in films and television programming. The theme of this year's Expo is depicted in the expo's poster, which is in the style of a container to measure rice. A picture representing each of the events being held in the Expo will be printed on the various containers in the poster. The containers are stacked on top of each other to form a tall tower. In addition to resembling the Taipei City landmark building Taipei 101, the tower also exhibits the character of Taiwan and signifies the meanings of building on one's experience, having a bountiful harvest and continuing to seek to achieve new heights. Minister Cheng formally unveiled the clever poster at the press conference.
Also attending the press conference were Mr. Wang Tung, chairman of the Golden Horse Film Festival Executive Committee, Mr. Ye Qianzhao, the chairman of the Asia Pacific Film Festival's Preparatory Committee, Mr. Kuo-chou Lai, chairman of Taiwan Television Enterprise, Ms. Chou You, chairwoman of the Taiwan Film Workers Association, and representatives from organizations hosting the Golden Horse Awards, the Asia Pacific Film Festival, the Taipei TV & Film Festival and the Taiwan Film & TV Project Promotion, and the 50 Year Retrospective of Taiwanese Language Film. These individuals each made short presentations introducing their respective events. Lastly, Minister Cheng led the group of eight VIPs to line up in the formation to symbolize the spirit of forging toward even higher aspirations for this year's Film & Television Expo.
