Tim Johnson, a reporter for the San Jose Mercury recently returned from a trip to Taiwan. While there, he spoke with Taiwan's vice president, Annette Lu. Lu, a former human rights campaigner who was jailed in the early 1980, is known for her forthright manners and speech.
When asked about a possible attack from China in the near future, Lu commented that "China's leaders are not willing to launch a war against Taiwan before 2008. They are withholding themselves for the Olympic Games." She also addressed the lack of invitations for Pres. Chen and herself to visit the White House. "Frankly speaking, both of us deserve an invitation to visit Washington, D.C....If Mr. Arafat, if the the Dalai Lama, can go, why can't we? We're freedom fighters."
