2. Outside
Taipei
(1)
Yehliu
A really fabulous place for kids is Yehliu, located on the northeast
coast. This strange maze of bizarre rock formations is the ultimate
place to explore.
Note: Make sure to lay down the ground rules clearly - No crossing
the red line. A very big line has been painted, showing which
part is safe. The other part looks safe most of the time, but
occasionally has high tides.
Next to Yehliu
is a great sea world with performing dolphins, etc.
(2) Tainan
Old Fort Provintia, the original Dutch settlement and Taiwan's
oldest historical site, is also a chance to step back in time
and a fun place for kids to explore. Also take a trip to the Great
Taiwan Magic Zoo, an amusement park perfect for children.
(3) Kaohsiung
The Science and Technology Museum is big, new, fun and educational.
You can also take in the exhibition center and IMAX theater.
When in Kaohsiung, above all make it to "Monkey Mountain." Officially
called the Tsaishan Nature Reserve, it's a great place to hike
and explore. Its claim to fame, of course, are the many Formosan
Rock Monkeys that roam the hills here. A species of macaque exclusive
to Taiwan, they are endangered and protected in the wild. The
ones on Monkey Mountain are semi-domesticated, and very entertaining.
They're known to snitch food, so to be safe, it's best not to
hold or eat food around the monkeys.
