The GIO is responsible for clarifying national policy, publicizing government ordinances and administrative achievements, releasing important information at home and abroad, actively developing overseas information and cultural projects, and strengthening cultural communication with the people of China. The office thus offers a wide variety of information services to the media and individuals at home and abroad. In accordance with the Organizational Statute of the Government Information Office under the Executive Yuan, the Regulations Governing the Structure of the Legal Affairs Committee of the GIO, the Regulations Governing the Structure of the Review Committee of Appeals of All Branches of the Executive Yuan, and the Regulations Governing the Structure of the Final Review Committee of All Government Organizations, the GIO is headed by a minister and two deputy ministers. Besides the secretariat, there are nine departments, five offices, and two committees: the Department of Domestic Information, Department of International Information, Department of Publications, Department of Motion Pictures, Department of Compilation and Translation, Department of Audio-Visual Materials, Department of Planning, and the Department of Local Information; the Information and Liaison Office, General Affairs Office, Accounting Office, Personnel Office, and the Civil Service Ethics Office; Information Technology Unit and the Legal Affairs Committee and Petitions and Appeals Committee. In addition, other groups have been established or reorganized as the need for them arises, such as the Executive Bulletin Unit and the Premier E-mail Unit.

Furthermore, in accordance with its organic law, the GIO has established 57 offices abroad as of April 2006. These agencies disseminate information internationally from their respective locations.
