The Department of Domestic Information releases news on major government administrative
policies; disseminates information about government policies, laws,
and regulations domestically; collects and reflects public sentiments;
handles public relations within the country for the executive branch
of the central government; and maintains constant liaison with the
Legislative Yuan
and the Control
Yuan.
The Department of International Information disseminates information
about the ROC internationally, supervises and coordinates the activities
of GIO representatives abroad, and gathers and responds to international media reports.
The Department of Publications
enforces legislation pertaining to the publication industry, administers
subsidies and awards for printed and audio publications; and reviews
compliance of imported and domestic publications with legislated
decency standards.

The
Department of Motion Pictures enforces legislation pertaining to the
motion-picture industry, administers motion picture industry subsidies
and awards, licenses motion pictures, administers motion picture ratings,
and conducts on-site investigation of movies being shown in theaters.
The Department of Compilation and Translation gathers publication materials; translates
important government documents; and compiles, edits, publishes and
distributes information in Chinese and various foreign languages.
The Department of Audio-Visual Materials produces and supplies films, photographs,
and laser discs regarding conditions in the ROC, as well as provides
technical assistance to both foreign correspondents and producers
of motion pictures and television programs.
The Department
of Planning is responsible for the overall planning of information
affairs at home and abroad; handling mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau
affairs; collecting, assessing, and making use of information on
mainland affairs.
The Department of Local Information analyzes local media reports; trains information officers of local governments; guides and maintains contact with local media industries; disseminates information domestically on major national policies, laws, and regulations; assists county and city governments in promoting cultural activities sponsored by the central government through various media channels; and provides guidance to community newspapers and magazines.
The Information and Liaison Office provides information
and assistance to people from foreign academic circles as well as
foreign journalists visiting or stationed in the ROC.

The General
Affairs Office is responsible for documentation and general clerical
procedures.
The Accounting Office is responsible for annual budgeting, accounting
and statistics.
The Personnel Office is responsible for personnel administration
and review.
The Civil
Service Ethics Office investigates charges of corruption and handles
disciplinary cases.
The Legal Affairs Committee monitors legislative developments pertinent
to GIO duties and responsibilities.
The Petitions and Appeals Committee is responsible for reviewing
appeals of cases resulting from GIO enforcement of laws and regulations
within its purview.
The Information Technology Unit handles computer-related work, both hardware and software. It also handles network security. Its most widely seen contribution to the Government Information Office is its overseeing of the GIO's extensive network of Web sites, including that of the
e-Government Portal and
Taiwan
Headlines.
The Executive Bulletin Unit publishes the weekly Executive Yuan
Bulletin and the monthly Government Information Office Bulletin.
The main purpose of these two publications is to uphold law and
order, maintain government credibility, encourage public participation,
and raise government efficiency.

The Department of Audio-Visual Materials produces and supplies documentary
films, topical videotapes, news footage, and slides to people
at home and abroad. |
The Premier E-mail Unit replies to all of the e-mails that the premier receives
from around the world.
Sinorama Magazine publishes and distributes the monthly bilingual
Sinorama
magazine in Chinese-English and Chinese-Japanese editions. Reporting
on the current situation and traditional culture of Taiwan, Sinorama
has articles on politics, economy, society, culture, education,
ecology, environment, medicine, and the lifestyles and customs of
the Taiwanese people, making it the ideal channel for giving the
international and overseas Chinese communities a better understanding
of Taiwan. Sinorama Magazine also publishes books comprised of articles
from its Chinese-English magazine, and all of these books have become
best sellers, receiving a huge welcome from readers both at home
and abroad.
