Culture and the Arts
Although the essence of tradi-
tional Chinese culture has been
preserved in Taiwan, many lo-
cal customs have borrowed from
it to produce special, new cha-
racteristics. For example, while
Peking Opera continues to be
very active here, many modern
performing arts have freely ad-
apted dances and gestures from
it. The spirit and techniques of
traditional glassmaking have
also been employed in modern
works of glass. In addition, cha-
racteristics of local culture and
language continue to be preser-
ved and passed on through da-
ily life and education; and new
forms of active, creative, and
alternative art bravely appear
every day. With the develop-
ment of a pluralistic society in
Taiwan, culture and the arts
have been filled with new vigor
and attraction.¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@
