Taiwan's Media in the Democratic Era
|
 |
The Cyberspace Revolution--The Internet
The Internet is the newest media sector. At present, there are
well over 3 million Internet accounts registered in the ROC, a number
which continues to grow rapidly. The print and broadcast media have
also appropriated the Internet, and Internet shopping services have
begun to expand as well. From schoolchildren to graduate students, from
businessmen to housewives, the people of Taiwan have enthusiastically
welcomed this new technology.
One of the greatest advantages of the Internet, to date, has been
the availability of on-line educational materials. Whether a scholar
is interested in the latest photos from the Hubble space telescope or
an on-line Latin-English dictionary, the Internet is the source. A
major problem with the Internet has been the slow speed of the download
process; however, with the advent of direct Internet access through
cable, speed will be increased exponentially, thus, not only maximizing
efficiency, but also minimizing frustration.
