The Gate of Rites

The Gate of Rites is located in front of the Main Hall of the Confucius Temple and is only opened during ceremonies. During normal times, the doors to the left and right of the Gate of Rites are used to enter and leave the temple and are called the "Gate of Golden Sound" and "Stirring Jade Gate," respectively.

The roof of the Gate of Rites is fashioned in the layered-eaves hsieh shan style, and its supporting beams are constructed in rich waving lines, creating a variety of changing forms within the simplicity of the overall structure. The carved wooden windows of the Gate of Rites are known as "Hornless Dragon Censer Window," since its design resembles this object in shape, and contains eight dragons.

Since two competing schools of temple craftsmanship existed in the olden days, the dragon at the tops of the portals on the left and right doors of the Gate of Rites are carved in different fashion.
