Confucius Memorial Service
The Confucius Memorial Service held on Teachers' Day involves a number of rites to express reverence to China's most famous teacher.
By 6:00 or 7:00 AM, the service is already underway, beginning with
the first drumming, and followed by the positioning of the ceremonial
attendants and inspector, opening the main gate, welcoming the spirit
of the Sage, offering food and drink, reading the Buddhist scriptures,
performing the eight-row dance, playing ceremonial
music, chanting the eulogies, withdrawing food and drink , sending
off the spirit of the Sage, observing the burning, closing the main
gates, withdrawing of attendants, conclusion of the ceremony, and firing
of the cannon. Each stage of the ceremony must be conducted with solemnity
and without error. Perhaps the most popular part of the service is the
pulling the Hair
of Wisdom, an event held at the end of the main ceremony.
