The mid-altitude areas comprise the warm-temperate coniferous forest belt (1800-2500 meters) and the warm-temperate broad-leaved forest belt (500-1800 meters in northern Taiwan and 700-1800 meters in southern Taiwan). There are also mixed conifer and hardwood forests between the two aforementioned forest belts, making the forest line not easily distinguishable.
A. Warm-temperate coniferous forest belt: from 1800 to 2500 meters
The forest line in this belt is not easily distinguishable, and in fact, forest distribution is quite complex, with forest formations at lower elevations greatly influenced by various types of terrain and soil. The main coniferoustree species found here are the Taiwania

cryptomerioides,Calocedrus formosana, Chamaecyparis formosensis, and Chamaecyparis obtusa sieb. & zucc. var. formosana, with the latter two types comprising the Chamaecyparis forests. Various animal species live here, including the Formosan wild boar, Formosan reeve's muntjac, Formosan sambar, Formosan serow, Formosan black bear, Formosan rock-monkey, and Red-bellied tree squirrel, as well as a few rare species, such as the Hsuehshan grass lizards and Moltrechti's green tree frogs. Birds that inhabit mid-altitude areas-including Formosan yuhina, White-eared sibia, Green-backed tit, Formosan yellow tit, Plumbeous water redstart, and Black-naped monarch-are often seen here as well, as are Formosan landlocked salmon, a national treasure more commonly known by the name of Taiwan trout.
