Baogong
trees are evergreen trees that are yellowish-brown in color
and hairy with the exception of the surface of their leaves,
which are oblong or lanceolate and roughly 7-10cm long. Their
leaf apices are somewhat acute, while their leaf bases are
obtuse, rounded, and smooth and dark-green on the surface.
Baogong trees have a simple, axillary inflorescence, oval
berries that are yellowish-brown when ripe, and bark that
is ebony in color-hence its nickname of "Ebony tree."
The tree's wood is quite fragile and easy to break. |
| Habitat: |
Baogong
trees can be found in many areas from southern China to Malaysia.
In Taiwan, they are distributed primarily in broad-leaved
forests at low altitudes. |
