Sub-tropical broad-leaved forest belt: areas below 500 meters in northern Taiwan and below 700 meters in southern Taiwan
Diospyros eriantha (Champ. Ex Benth)
Profile
Scientific name: Diospyros eriantha (Champ. Ex Benth)
Common nams: Baogong tree, Ebony tree

Features: Baogong trees are evergreen trees that are yellowish-brown in color and hairy with the exception of the surface of their leaves, which are oblong or lanceolate and roughly 7-10cm long. Their leaf apices are somewhat acute, while their leaf bases are obtuse, rounded, and smooth and dark-green on the surface. Baogong trees have a simple, axillary inflorescence, oval berries that are yellowish-brown when ripe, and bark that is ebony in color-hence its nickname of "Ebony tree." The tree's wood is quite fragile and easy to break.
Habitat: Baogong trees can be found in many areas from southern China to Malaysia. In Taiwan, they are distributed primarily in broad-leaved forests at low altitudes.
