| Features: |
The
Candidia barbata has a long, flat body, small cycloid scales,
and a forked tail. They usually grow to about 5-15cm long,
and the upper half of their eyes are red. Their most distinguishing
characteristic is the wide, bluish-black stripe that runs
along the center of their sides, starting from the gill covers
and ending at their caudal peduncle. Males have breeding tuberdes
on both their mouth and gill covers all year round, and display
a bright, nuptial red coloration on the underside of their
head, belly, dorsal fin, and pelvic fin. Females are lighter
in color and have no breeding tuberdes. |
| Behavior: |
An
omnivorous fish, Candidia barbata are poor swimmers that prefer
to live in cold waters, usually inhabiting the upper and middle
reaches of rivers and their tributaries. They are also active
in the rear portions of lakes, in the shallow waters near
lakeshores, and in the slow-flowing waters at the head of
lakes. |
