Profile
Scientific name: Candidia barbata (Regan)
Common name: Yi Zhi Hua, Shan Lian Zi (in Mandarin pronunciation)

Features: The Candidia barbata has a long, flat body, small cycloid scales, and a forked tail. They usually grow to about 5-15cm long, and the upper half of their eyes are red. Their most distinguishing characteristic is the wide, bluish-black stripe that runs along the center of their sides, starting from the gill covers and ending at their caudal peduncle. Males have breeding tuberdes on both their mouth and gill covers all year round, and display a bright, nuptial red coloration on the underside of their head, belly, dorsal fin, and pelvic fin. Females are lighter in color and have no breeding tuberdes.
Behavior: An omnivorous fish, Candidia barbata are poor swimmers that prefer to live in cold waters, usually inhabiting the upper and middle reaches of rivers and their tributaries. They are also active in the rear portions of lakes, in the shallow waters near lakeshores, and in the slow-flowing waters at the head of lakes.
Habitat: Candidia barbata usually appear in the upper and middle reaches of rivers and their tributaries.
