The Black bulbul has an average body length of 24cm. Its Chinese
name, hong zui hei bei, translates into "red-beaked black
bulbul" and is a description of the bird's appearance:
their entire plumage is shimmering black, but their beak, legs,
and feet are all red. Black bulbuls also have a fluffy crest
on top of their head, and their flight and tail feathers are
all decorated with thin black lines.
Behavior:
Black
bulbuls can be quite noisy, making various distinct but loud
calls that sound like "miao-" Their main diet consists
of seeds and insects, and they are often seen in small groups
either roosting on decayed branches in high forests or cackling
and flying about in search of food.
Habitat:
Black
bulbuls are a sub-species of bird endemic to Taiwan. They are
usually found in broad-leaved forests in the lower and middle-altitude
ranges extending up to 1500m, especially the adjoining area
where mountain hills and forests meet. During the summer, they
can also be found in high altitude areas.
