Sus scrofa

|
| Features: |
Formosan
wild boars have a large head, small ears, a long snout flanked
by a white stripe along each side, and two sharp and narrow
tusks growing from the tip of their snout. The tusks on males
are more protruding than on females. |
| Behavior: |
The
Formosan wild boar is omnivorous and migratory, moving to
lower elevation areas when winter comes. They use their narrow
snouts and tusks to dig up the earth in search of food, and
in the process, often destroy croplands-hence their consideration
by farmers to be a serious pest. As they do not have sweat
glands, the boars will often roll themselves in muddy wetlands
near mountain streams to keep cool and get rid of parasites. |
| Habitat: |
Formosan
wild boars are an endemic subspecies to Taiwan. They usually
inhabit mountainous regions at elevations below 3000m, including
hills, grasslands, croplands, and woodlands. |
