The Heng-chun bird wing butterfly is a large swallowtail with
a wingspan of 9-11.5cm and black forewings. Males are smaller
than females and have grayish veins on their wings; golden
hind wings with long, black, jigsaw-shaped spots along the
outer margins; and long, beige, longitudinal hairs on their
back and abdomen. The larger females are grayish-black in
color with wider forewings and a complex pattern of golden
patches and black curved stripes on their hind wings, which
have no folds. |
| Behavior: |
The
larvae of Heng-chun bird wing butterflies tend to feed off
the leaves of the Aristolochia cucurbitifolia and the Aristolochia
zollingeriana. Adults are slow fliers and can be seen all
year round, especially from March to April and September to
October. Heng-chun bird wing butterflies prefer to sip nectar
in the morning or at dusk and usually breed several times
a year. |

Heng-chun
bird wing butterflies live in southeastern Taiwan's mountainous
regions at low elevations, especially in the areas around
Kenting. |
