Heng-chun birdwing butterfly
Profile
Scientific name: Troides aeacus kaguya (Nakahara & Esaki)

Features: The Heng-chun bird wing butterfly is a large swallowtail with a wingspan of 9-11.5cm and black forewings. Males are smaller than females and have grayish veins on their wings; golden hind wings with long, black, jigsaw-shaped spots along the outer margins; and long, beige, longitudinal hairs on their back and abdomen. The larger females are grayish-black in color with wider forewings and a complex pattern of golden patches and black curved stripes on their hind wings, which have no folds.
Behavior: The larvae of Heng-chun bird wing butterflies tend to feed off the leaves of the Aristolochia cucurbitifolia and the Aristolochia zollingeriana. Adults are slow fliers and can be seen all year round, especially from March to April and September to October. Heng-chun bird wing butterflies prefer to sip nectar in the morning or at dusk and usually breed several times a year.
Habitat: Heng-chun bird wing butterflies live in southeastern Taiwan's mountainous regions at low elevations, especially in the areas around Kenting.
