Results of the 2004 Presidential Election and Referendum Vote

Announcement by Central Election Commission Chairman Huang Shih-cheng

Present today are two commissioners of the Central Election Commission, Mr. Ji Jheng-nan and Mr. Jhang Sheng-syong, as well as the President of the Taiwan Police College.

I would like to apologize that lateness in transmission of results from some polling stations in certain cities and counties has delayed our announcement of the final result; delayed it by quite some time. For this, we would like to apologize. It is crucial that the figures announced by the Central Election Commission are accurate. If a polling station has failed to report, or if there is a discrepancy in the ballot count, therefore, we must verify it. I will now announce the accurate and final figures.

In the election for the eleventh-term president and vice president, the total number of ballots cast for the No.1 candidates Chen Shui-bian and Lu Hsiu-lien was 6,471,970; while that for the No.2 candidates Lien Chan and James C. Y. Soong was 6,442,452 ballots. The total numbers of valid ballots was 12,914,422, and of invalid ballots was 337,297, making a total number of 13,251,719 ballots cast. A total of 13,252,490 ballots were distributed, meaning that 771 were not cast. The number of the eligible voters was 16,507,179, and the turnout rate was 80.28 percent. The above represents the official announcement of the election results.
